Keren Rice was the first director of Indigenous Studies at the University of Toronto, back in the early 1990’s, and she is currently the interim director. She has been involved in research on Indigenous languages for many years, focusing on the Dene languages in the Northwest Territories. She compiled a grammar of Dene (also called Slavey) and a dictionary of one variety, and has helped in the development of curriculum materials. She is currently involved in a community-based research project looking at language change in Dene through stories. She is the co-chair of the Council on Aboriginal Initiatives and is a member of the Truth and Reconciliation Steering Committee at the University of Toronto.
