Acclaimed author and professor Hisham Matar presents The Return, a memoir of his journey to find his father and rediscover his country. Following the reading, Matar will be interviewed by CBC’s Marivel Taruc. This event is hosted by Alexandra Grigorescu.
Alexandra Grigorescu's first novel Cauchemar (ECW Press, 2015) was selected as the Amazon.ca Editors' Canadian Spotlight for March 2015 and nominated for a 2016 Sunburst Award. She holds an MA in Creative Writing from U of T and lives in Toronto.
Hisham Matar was born in New York City to Libyan parents and spent his childhood in Tripoli and Cairo. His first novel, In the Country of Men, won six international literary awards and has been translated into twenty-eight languages. His second novel, Anatomy of a Disappearance, was named one of the best books of the year by The Guardian and the Chicago Tribune. Matar lives in London and in New York City, where he teaches at Barnard. He will be presenting The Return. Supported by the British Council Canada
Marivel Taruc is the host of Our Toronto and a familiar face in the newsroom as a reporter with CBC Toronto News at 6 pm. Previously, she was the business anchor for CBC News: Morning. In her years as a financial and economics reporter, Taruc covered such stories as the economic aftermath of the World Trade Center attacks, the unprecedented collapse and bailout of GM and Chrysler and the 2008 global economic meltdown. She has interviewed top newsmakers of the day, including business leaders and federal cabinet ministers. Taruc graduated from Ryerson University. She lives in Toronto with her husband and two daughters.
