Last night (April 2nd), Susan G. Cole, Senior Entertainment Editor of NOW Magazine, hosted a fun-filled evening of poetry appreciation and healthy competition at Poetry NOW: 6th annual Battle of the Bards. There was electricity in the air and a momentum that lasted throughout the nearly two-hour battle of 20 poets in our Brigantine Room.

The jury was comprised of our Director, Geoffrey E. Taylor, Artistic Associate Jen Tindall and the Dean of the Humber School of Creative and Performing Arts, Joe Kertes.

After a well-fought battle of words, we named Catherine Graham as the winner! Graham gave a captivating performance and will receive an invitation to read at the 35th annual International Festival of Authors (October 23 to November 2, 2014) and an ad for her book in NOW Magazine.

Catherine Graham is the author of four previous poetry collections and teaches creative writing at the University of Toronto’s School of Continuing Studies. She lives in Toronto. Last night, she presented work from her 2013 collection, Her Red Hair Rises with the Wings of Insects.

We has also invited two additional Poetry NOW participants (or “Bards!”) to read at the IFOA: Julie Joosten (Light Light) and Jacob Scheier (Letter From Brooklyn). Thanks to all who participated—it was a fabulous evening!
